Hey alumni!
After almost 15 years as the Storyboard guy at Cap, original faculty member, John Delaney is leaving the big city and, unfortunately, Capilano University. He'll still be dropping into town for guest lectures but if anyone would like to say "so long" to John, he and his band, The Indestructibles, are playing the Boulevard Casino in Coquitlam on September 18th! Come out to join other former students and fellow instructors and wish John luck in the Okanangan!

The show starts at 9:30pm but get there early for a seat and maybe connect with other Commercial Animation grads!

Question for everyone.

Do we want to have a TV playing our favorite clips? It's been done in the past. I talked to Seng and he said it was pretty much ignored his grad year. So I don't know if it's worth it. Let me know what you all think. In the mean time I have created a folder in tsunami/students/gradshow/clips that we can put copies of our favorite avi clips. One clip per person. If the majority of people or Don really want a TV running with our clips then I'll arrange to get a disk compilled Thursday evening.

Student Blogs
On the day of the grad show, a link to your blog will be posted to the Commercial Animation Alumni blog. This is where I direct people (that and gradshow.com) when they call looking for animators and designers. You should make this blog a professional-looking site with your best work on view. We all know it's how a lot of work comes in. It's also 10% of the major projects grade.

Mode22 Marketing is currently looking for an animator to work on a few animations for a presentation.
The animations will be done in 2d, and need to work with Apple Keynote (Quicktime movie preferred).
This is a fun project and involves a sketch animation / stick figure, to flow with some music for 2 minutes.
The tone of the project is to have a natural, artistic / sketch feel. (no 3d modeling required).
Also, several animations within the presentation are required.
As this is a fun project, there is a lot of room for creative expression. Your idea's will be welcomed.
Animations need to be completed by May 15th.
Contract fee to be negotiated.

OTT-LITE is 40% off at Michaels Craft Store until the 20th.

I've been using an OTT-LITE desk lamp this semester and it totally prevents my eyes from hurting or straining as I work at a computer for long periods of time (Flash... :o[ ). It uses some science-y "natural earth phosphors " that mimic natural daylight. For me, it was a good investment.

GRADSHOW PAIRS

Hi everyone. We need to pair up for gradshow and we have POSTED A FORM ON THE WHITEBOARD in class. Please pick your partners and fill in the form by APRIL 17, next Tuesday. And we'll draw the group for the table arrangements.

Each pair will share a board to display their stuff and a computer for their demoreels. After you are done your own demo reel, you could export it as Quicktime or AVI files, and Craig will help us to put the files in a program in the computer and loop the reels.

Table partners

It's that time of year that we should look at choosing our table partners for gradshow. That's right folks, you and a friend get to share a monitor with your demo reels playing on it. Between you will stand a tall black board which is perfect for mounting any artwork you want to showcase. You'll also recieve the your own table space, a perfect setting for portfolio's, buisness cards and whatever else you think the studios want to see.

As for your placement in the room. The set up commitee will create a random assignment system, like drawing the names of the chosen partners out of some hatlike device.

If you want to get started on your page layout. it is now available in \\Tsunami\students\Gradshow\invite and catalogue under catalogue pages ver2.
just save as (a name you choose) and get to work. Stay within the blue guides to avoid work being cut off. If you want a boarder around your avatar you are welcome to make a simple one that works with your design.

As for the avatars on the front cover. They do not have to be the same as the avatar on your page. (A lot of people are doing headshots for their individual pages. You might want to show off more on the cover.) To keep thing impartial on who is on the cover, Craig will arrange to have some of the teachers vote on thier favorites.

And a reminder to have your final avatars in by Friday.

Grad meeting postponed.

The meeting scheduled for Friday the 9th has been rescheduled for the following Tuesday at 4pm. This move is done to try to assure better attendance. And the time was set not to interfere with ours or digital's class time.

Also a reminder about Avatars. At this point you should have a rough finished and be working on revisions. You can place your rough or final avatars in the folder in Tsunami/students/gradshow/avatar_commercial animation.

Your CapCollege Email Address!

Although the College has required faculty to use the official student email addresses (given to you when your application for admission was accepted), I haven't been doing that, prefering to use the blog or your own emails.

But since not everyone accesses the blog, and since people change their email addresses or use services that may block distribution lists or attachments, I think the best solution is to use your College email address from now on. It is the one official method for online College communication and I should have been using it anyway. If you haven't been using that email service and don't want to go to the trouble of accessing a new mailbox, there are tools on-line to allow you to forward your College emails to the email system of your choice.

When replying to emails you send me, I will use the address that you sent from and which pops up when I hit "Reply". In an emergency, I will use the telephone number(s) on the contact sheet you gave me.

Kevin Chai Revisited

Again, I apologize for not getting the word out to everyone on time for this. It wasn't the usual guest lecture...it was a Layout class for first years, arranged by John Delaney during his regular class time. The reason I posted the notice late was, with all my other duties, that item came in under the radar and I hadn't realized it until Kevin emailed me for directions on Thursday. Lame excuse, I know, but it's the truth.

The suggestion that I would purposely keep students from something that would help them succeed in their careers is a serious one. The success of my students is my very first priority outside of (and sometimes in spite of) my responsibility to my family. I will always do my best to assist you whenever I can and will work to help you make the grad show a success.

Getting back to Kevin: the simple solution is to see if he will come back for a return engagement and I'll get on that right away, this morning and let you know when I get an answer. If he can't come, I'll try to find a replacement who can fit the bill.

Craig will be available at this time to give feedback, color advice, etc on people's avatar roughs. Also, it is a session to help each other in small groups to critique and push each other's designs.

Please hand in your roughs in the Tsunami folder for Craig and committee to look at. Roughs are roughs. ie: concept sketches, several variations, or one solid design.

Final size at the end will be 2x2" @300 DPI. (but your roughs don't have to be...)

I've been asked to extend the deadline (see below) so that people can finish up their Anim assignments for Tuesday. That's no problem. Mid-term work is now due:

"Reading Break"

The reading break (this Monday and Tuesday) is a way for academic transfer students to study for upcoming exams. In a 15 week, career-oriented program with final projects but no exams, having a reading break of two days just sets back the course work.

The way things work with Commercial Animation:
-instructors are there for class as usual
-students may choose to attend (or not)
-being absent those days will not affect your attendance record

As for assignments, find out what the instructor wants. I extended my animation project by one class.

There is a class being taught in the Flash lab for the next FOUR Sundays. It's a 3 hour Flash animation workshop for young people. Normally, the lab would be inaccessible for you, however I'm okay with having you use the space if:

1. You really need to use the lab, can't work in the line test room or at another time.

2. You keep in mind that minors are there and do not post objectionable material in the class or on the desktops of computers (including wallpaper).

3. Don't disturb the class, ESPECIALLY by allowing the door to slam or making noise.

Line Test Room - Remodelling
Facilities has decided to put in the new counters in the camera room now instead of this summer. Dan (the carpenter) says that he can do it with a minimum of hassle. He suggested doing one side at a time, which will leave two machines for shooting. Also, he said it shouldn't take too long....a couple days. I've gone along with this as it would be nice to have a more efficient and professional set-up. Hopefully, everyone agrees.

Application for Graduation
You should have received an email Jan 10 regarding your "Application for Graduation". This application needs to be submitted to Registration in order for you to receive your diploma and attend the graduation ceremony, usually held in June. Critical Path Submission
Please read the course outline if you have questions regarding course requirements, deadlines and how to submit. The second requirement is the critical path, which is due (as explained in class) as a completed Excel file. This needs to be emailed before Midnight tonight. You can send it later, but it won't count towards the 5 percent of the final grade.

P.S. If you did the paper version and not the digital, just photocopy it and put it in my mailbox in AR 106 (beside Judi's desk) before your animation class Tues morning.

The theme should hopefully thread the gradshow/catalogue/invite as a coherent whole. It can be as simple as a color, or as complex as....... __________ (insert something funny here).

Free Animation/Drafting Tables (SOLD OUT)

Erich and I have gotten a Flash speaker, (Kent, our fellow 3D comrade!) to come talk to us on Tuesday February 6th, 2-5pm. Kent is very knowledgable in Flash Animation and is willing to show us industry tricks that will help us greatly.

Please post any specifics on what you'd like to learn so Kent can prepare ahead of time. Kent will be looking here to get some insights into what we'd like.

Please keep in mind that this can also be beneficial for designing your Flash character, as we can learn what build types are Flash animation-friendly and will help us avoid any guff.

Topics Kent can cover:
- Design, Asset building and Animation as it pertains to Flash
- Industy tricks that teachers tend to over look
- Formulas for faster work flow and ways to hopefully make Flash more enjoyable to work with

Guest Speaker this Week - Mercury Filmworks

On Wednesday, Jan 17 (tomorrow) at 2:30 PM, we'll have recruiters from Mercurey Filmworks. Mercury has a Vancouver production center and it's main studio is in Ottawa. They work with a lot of Flash-like animation (US Animation's OPUS). Please attend and bring questions with you about possible work, future trends in animation, requirements, anything to help you chart your course.

I can't get the big room so we'll hold this in the first year room.

Please make sure that you are registered today at the latest. You need to be registered in the first week so that the bean counters get an accurate snapshot of our numbers. This is very important. Students not registered will not be able to attend class on Monday.

Animation Assignment 2

2 Character Dialogue.

Animate 2 characters of your choosing in a conversation together. The dialogue can be no shorter than 8 seconds in length. One character MUST have secondary action and the characters must touch at one point during the scene. This is a single scene with NO CUTS.

By End of day Tuesday 16th you must have shown me the characters, the staging of the scene and the dialoigue you will be using. We have a short class so please be prepared as we do not have a lot of time together.

Assignment is Due Tuesday February 6th at 9am.

Please post feedback on what I have done. Any concerns or unforseen things. Topic ideas are still welcomed and existing topics are flexible if you speak up.

I have been advised that it will start to get busier (hinting perhaps too busy for a club) come February, thus I am hesitant in continuing to line up speakers. But two hours a week of someone teaching us is very valuable and worthy. What do you guys think of this?

The best solution that I can think of at this time, is that someone who has chosen to major in design can take over the organization of this design club come February. I have some contacts of great designers that we can ask to come in and Erich is also very helpful in helping us find some. We can also ask Sarah and Will to return as well, if they have the time to kindly do so.

New Blog.

Class of 2007 will move to the "new blog" format run by Google if people are okay with it. They require you to have a Gmail email account. There are freedom of info and privacy issues in how Google uses information. We could also get a set-up on Gradshow instead like the Digital blog, though I like the relative independence of this site. Anyone have any info or suggestions?

Camera Room is operational again.
Well, the Facilities department has told me they are NOT working on the camera room this week due to other priorities and since we need the space when class is in session it won't happen until summer. I went in and cleaned up the space this morning (will do more this week) and moved excess equipment out of the area.

P.S. I've asked Judi to request empty recycling bins for both classrooms. Please, when you see the bin 3/4 full, email Judi and ask her to get Facilities to bring up an empty one. When the bins are overflowing, all the heaping stuff just goes into the garbage before the bins are taken.

I've left my wacom pen at school. Probably in 319.
It's white all over (the school ones are greyish with a red or blue "eraser") and it has "R T" carved into it. Hopefully it'll still be wherever I left it.

Camera Room Reno During the Break
The line test room will likely be out of service during the break. It was the only time we could build new counters and paint the walls without causing a major disruption. Sorry for the inconvenience, but Facilities can't work the room unless it's empty. I will see if I can set up a line test system in the lab instead. (I'll add a comment here when I get the lab line test system up).
